Andrew Luks is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington. He has an active program of work in high altitude medicine and physiology. In addition to clinical work at high altitude including a stint at the Himalayan Rescue Associations Pheriche clinic, two volunteer ranger patrol missions on Denali and a medical mission to the Zanskar River Valley in northern India among others, he has authored numerous publications in the field including numerous articles related to travel to high altitude with preexisting medical illness, the Wilderness Medical Society’s Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment of Acute Altitude Illness, several chapters in Auerbach’s Wilderness Medicine and most recently, the 6th edition of the leading textbook in the field Ward, Milledge and West’s High Altitude Medicine and Physiology. He also leads his School of Medicine’s course in respiratory physiology and pathophysiology and is also a co-author for West’s Respiratory Physiology and West’s Pulmonary Pathophysiology as well as a small monograph on cardiopulmonary exercise testing. In his spare time, Dr. Luks takes advantage of his proximity to a lot of great mountains in his backyard and gets out as much as possible for scrambles, backpacking trips and, his favorite activity, backcountry skiing.
