Prof Jo Bradwell

In 1976, Jo Bradwell was a founding member of the Birmingham Medical Research Expeditionary Society with John Delamere and Tim Harvey (retired consultant physicians). Since then, the society has had 29 research expeditions to the Himalaya, Andes and Alps making it the longest running altitude research society in the world. 150 members have included medical students, medical doctors and research scientists. Jo has been chairman and latterly president of the BMRES since its foundation and has led or co-led 24 of the expeditions. There are over 250 publications including three in the Lancet. The Society has especially focussed on the physiology, diagnosis and the treatment of acute mountain sickness using acetazolamide, progesterone and other medications.
